Position Overview
DLB is seeking an experienced Lead Diesel Mechanic to oversee all shop operations, lead and mentor our mechanical team, and ensure high-quality, efficient repair work. The ideal candidate is a seasoned technician with exceptional diagnostic abilities, strong leadership skills, and a proven track record in diesel repair, preventative maintenance, and heavy equipment service.
This individual will serve as the shop’s go-to expert—capable of diagnosing issues that others cannot, maintaining repair standards, coordinating workflow, and supporting the growth of our in-house mechanic department.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Diagnostic Skills
Perform advanced diagnostics on diesel engines, heavy trucks, trailers, and equipment.
Accurately identify complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and drivability issues.
Oversee and verify repairs conducted by mechanics and apprentices.
Lead troubleshooting efforts when the team is unable to identify the issue.
Leadership & Team Management
Lead a team of mechanics and apprentices; provide training, guidance, and mentorship.
Hold regular shop meetings to discuss workflow, safety, performance, and updates.
Assign daily tasks and ensure work is completed efficiently and to quality standards.
Collaborate closely with the Shop Assistant to maintain organization, communication, and job tracking.
Operational Responsibilities
Maintain proper documentation for all repairs, parts usage, and work orders.
Ensure all paperwork is completed accurately and submitted on time.
Support scheduling and workflow to minimize downtime and improve shop productivity.
Assist with bringing in new work by communicating professionally with customers and vendors.
Oversee preventative maintenance (PMs) schedules and ensure PMs are completed on time.
Mechanical Expertise
Extensive knowledge in:
Diesel engines
Electrical systems
Trailer and truck braking systems
Aftertreatment systems (DEF, DPF, regen, etc.)
Suspension and steering
Hydraulics
Transmissions & driveline
Preventative maintenance
Ensure repairs meet DOT, safety, and manufacturer standards.
Safety & Compliance
Promote a safety-first culture within the shop.
Ensure all staff follow OSHA, DOT, and company safety procedures.
Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and compliant work environment.
Qualifications
7+ years of diesel repair experience (fleet, heavy truck, or heavy equipment).
2+ years of leadership or lead technician experience preferred.
Proven ability to diagnose complex engine, electrical, and mechanical issues.
Strong communication skills; ability to lead meetings and coach a team.
Experience with repair software, work order systems, and diagnostic tools.
Must have your own professional-grade tools.
Valid driver’s license (CDL a plus).
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
